Mrs. Maxine (Grady) Shepherd, 92, of Searcy, Ark., departed this life on Monday. She was born Aug. 23, 1927, in Beedeville, the daughter of John Calvin and Frances (Beede) Grady.

Mrs. Shepherd was a 1943 graduate of Beedeville High School. She then attended Harding University, earning her BA. In 1947, she helped clear the ground to start Camp Wyldewood, where she taught classes for campers, and gave swimming lessons for 10 summers. Mrs. Shepherd was Harding’s first female P.E. Teacher and basketball coach. She was a member of West Side Church of Christ in Searcy.

Mrs. Shepherd was a wonderful Christian woman, wife and mother.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, John Grady; and sister, Mary Etta Grady Madden.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Doug Shepherd; one son, Michael Grady Shepherd and wife, Rose, of Beedeville; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and more friends than anyone could count.

Visitation is Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Eightmile Cemetery. Please consider memorials to Children’s Home Inc., Camp Wyldewood or Searcy Hospice.
