Constitution Week proclaimed

Members of the Frederick Van Patten chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met recently with Searcy Mayor Kyle Osborne as he signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 17-23 as National Constitution Week in Searcy. DAR encourages everyone to begin Constitution Week by ringing bells for 17 seconds at 4 p.m. Sept. 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution at 4 p.m. in 1789. After the National Society DAR’s request to Congress, President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 signed into law the annual observance of Constitution Week. “While Independence Day is a well-recognized holiday few people know about Constitution Week, an annual commemoration of the living document that upholds and protects the freedoms central to our American way of life,” said JoyLynn Edwards, vice regent of the Frederick Van Patten DAR chapter.
