Betty Jo Rodgers, 74 of Searcy, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009. Betty was born in Step Rock, Ark., on Oct. 14, 1934 to the late John W. Pickens and Blanche Mae Woods Pickens. She was a homemaker and a member of Judsonia Church of Christ. Cooking, taking care of her family and spending time with her grandchildren were always the enjoyment of her life.

Leon “Pepper” Martin

Leon “Pepper” Martin, 90, of Bald Knob, recently of Little Rock, passed from this life Monday, June 22, 2009. He was born on Feb. 7, 1919, in Russell, Ark. to the late Frank and Blanche Martin. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Juanita Murphy Martin and one sister, Mildred Alfrey. He is survived by two sons, David and wife Hettie Lou of Judsonia, Tommy and wife Ruth of Cabot; one daughter, Ruth Crane and husband Ransom of Little Rock; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one brother, Cecil “Pete” Martin and wife Margaret of Searcy.

Corinne Harrison Hart, 100, died June 19, 2009. She was born Jan. 28, 1909 in Letona to James M. and Nola Frances Harrison. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Louis W. Harrison, Cornelious “Bub” Harrison, Capt. James Harrison, Jean Harrison, and Umpsted Harrison; a sister, Martha Virginia Harrison; husband E. V. “Dick” Hart and many, many friends.

Kenneth W. Simmons

Kenneth Williams Simmons, 66, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at White County Medical Center in Searcy. A hard-fought struggle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a form of cancer, took the life of this beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Ken was born Nov. 3, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to Searcy at the beginning of his teen years. Because he always had an intense interest in airplanes and aviation, he took flying lessons, made a solo flight and earned his pilot's license just one week after his 16th birthday.

Nola Marie Melton, 89, died June 18. Funeral service will be Monday, June 22 at 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Zion, Ark., under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne. Visitation will be Monday, June 22 from noon to 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church.
